April, 2003 (Month 23)(images from August 7 to September 5)



As Alex was nearing her first birthday, we were excited that she was just getting the whole walking thing down -- she was able to walk all over the place at her birthday party.  Now as her second birthday draws closer, it's her conversational skills that she'll (hopefully) be able to show off when the family and friends come to visit next month (although she still clams up around strangers, she usually gets more comfortable after about 1/2 an hour).  But her words and phrases get longer and more complex every day, and it only takes her a little while to commit things to memory (we just showed her a cantaloupe the other day, and she already can identify it by name).  But even long words like "watermelon", "hippopotamus", and "rhinoceros" seem to come pretty easy to her now.  And the long phrases are lots of fun:  "Huff and puff and blow your house down", "Alex lay down on the floor...step on me!" (First she stands on Daddy, and then she wants Daddy to stand on her.)  Her sleeping patterns are getting pretty solid -- she enjoys going down for her afternoon nap (from about 12:30 to 2:30), and night-time isn't too bad if we have the routines down (and she generally sleeps through the night, with occasional requests for milk at 3:30).  Her appetite is good (she loves meat -- meatballs, steak, chicken, etc.), and she's very courageous (she likes to run down hills or meet new kids).  And she LOVES the fact that she's about to have a baby sister.

Week 1: Mommy and I went to a music class at the library! After we read some books...

  ...we started singing and dancing! (Watch!) I watched with the other children... (Watch!)
 
  ...it was interesting.  (Watch me play!) And fun!  (Watch me dance!)
 
  Then we went outside the library and played. It's a sandbox, but it looks like dirt!
 
  As long as it goes in the pail, I'm OK. Hey, what's that over there?
 
  Oh, nothing...just Mommy taking a picture of me. Daddy and I are about to embark on our walk.
 
  Mommy and I went to the zoo (again)! I never get tired of petting the goats.
 
  Have I demonstrated that I can smile for the camera? Daddy, how many pictures are we taking?
 
  I love petting Peanut! It just makes me so happy!

Week 2:
  Hey, look at these roses! They smell good! (Watch me smell!)
 
  But be careful...they have thorns! OK, let's go in the library!
 
  I played with a bear... ...and read a book... (Watch!)
 
  ...and looked at the little chicks... (...they go "cheep cheep cheep"!)
 
  I even played with this frog! I played with Grace (and her dog). (Watch!)
 
  Look how pretty I am in my green dress! You can watch me spin around!
 
  I play with PlayDoh all the time... ...it's fun in my fingers! (Watch!)
 
  Look, Mommy...PlayDoh! They opened a new area in the zoo today!
 
  I got real close to the orangutan! I also saw the chimpanzees...
 
  ...they were neat! And then we all rode on the sky ride!

Week 3:
  Let's start the week in the living room... Mommy and I played "Peanut Butter"! (Watch!)
 
  Then we played "Ring around the rosie". It's fun to sit by the fireplace!
 
  Mid-week, we had the obligatory trip to Sea World. But on the weekend, it was all Easter!
 
  Saturday was a mini egg hunt at Papa/Nonna's. I put a bunch of eggs in my basket! (Watch!)
 
  Then I tried to open this egg, instead of posing! Here, I'll get it!
 
  Yay!  A cookie is inside! What else is in there, Papa?
 
  Later on Saturday, we went to a party! Daddy and I played in the bouncy thing.
 
  Then I played with the big girls! We jumped...
 
  ...and screamed... ...and fell down...
 
  Sometimes I just watched.  (But mostly I jumped.) Then it was time to blow out the candles...
 
  Mike and his daughter Skyler did a good job! I ate some cake...
 
  Here, Daddy...want some? On Sunday, we had an Easter Egg hunt at home!
 
  I found some on the steps... ...and in the garden...
 
  ...and on the table. I gave this one to Mommy!
 
  I wonder what's in this egg? Here you go, Daddy!
 
  Look at all the eggs I found! I'm rich!  (Are eggs worth money?)
 
  Ooh, a few more on the lawn! There's candy is this egg.
 
  And peanuts in this one! Mommy got me an Easter basket. (Watch!)
 
  I got a cup with a straw... And I got another Barbie doll!

  Then I played in the backyard... I chased the cat!
 
  He likes when I pet him. Although he's not as thrilled when I pick him up.
